Optician Job Description

Opticians are health professionals who review written prescriptions by optometrists to provide the correct eyewear to patients. Their duties include helping their clients pick the proper glasses suited for their needs, adjusting eyewear when necessary, and repairing broken frames or lenses.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Make appropriate recommendations for patient’s eye wear based upon their prescription needs while respecting the latest fashion trends and patient style preferences
  • Complete all frame and spectacle lens orders according to company policy, using all available resources
  • Take appropriate measurements for each order
  • Receive and inspect patient orders from lab daily and verify accuracy of the order
  • Use the lensometer to read prescriptions and verify orders
  • Must be comfortable and confident with adjustment, repair and dispense of patient eyewear
  • Follow through with orders to ensure timely filing of patient’s insurance to guarantee order is completed in full
  • Maintain accurate inventory of all frames and optical supplies
  • Compliance with company policies and procedures and College of Opticians of Ontario
  • Create work orders for lab technicians and provide relevant information for them to make new lenses
  • Complete additional daily office tasks such as keeping records of clients’ prescriptions, preparing paperwork for customers’ insurance payments, maintaining order inventory, and tracking requests in the system
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by management including housekeeping duties such as garbage removal, and potentially shoveling snow in the winter months

Job Requirements

  • Ontario Optician’s License Required / Member of College of Opticians of Ontario 
  • Strong customer service skills as retention and satisfaction of patients is our top priority
  • Strong competency in English language, clear and neat handwriting is a must
  • Experience in a sales-based role in a retail environment
  • Optical experience preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and think quickly to ensure expedient service to patients
  • Experience operating lensometers and other optics equipment is an asset

Additional Information

  • Full time position, must be able to work a flexible schedule
  • Working hours are 9:00am – 5:00pm Monday – Friday and Saturday 9:00am – 12:00pm.
  • Wage range is $22 – $32 per hour based on skills and experience
