Role Overview:
The Camp Maintenance Officer at Scouts Canada is responsible for ensuring the safe, clean, and efficient operation of camp facilities, equipment, and grounds. This includes maintaining all infrastructure to meet health and safety standards, supporting construction and maintenance projects, and ensuring compliance with environmental and regulatory requirements. The role also involves responding to security concerns, representing Scouts Canada to external stakeholders with professionalism, and fostering strong partnerships with volunteers. A commitment to health and safety legislation, high-quality customer service, and collaborative teamwork is essential to success in this position.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Portfolio:
• Operations: Maintain camp, materials and equipment in good working order and to required safety standards.
• Operations: Maintain all camp facilities in a clean, hygienic condition, meeting all health regulations.
• Operations: Assist with construction and camp maintenance projects as directed
• Safety: Ensures camp is secure and responds to any security concerns as required
• Safety: Maintain camp tools and equipment in good working condition using applicable safety equipment
• Safety: Ensure proper disposal of all waste materials following all applicable laws and regulations
• Safety: Ensure local compliance and reporting with all regulatory and safety obligations.
• Other duties: As assigned.
Leadership:
• Externality: Represent the organization to external stakeholders, agents, clients and partners and provide high-quality customer service.
• Health and Safety: Follow Health and Safety legislation and regulations and report deficiencies.
• Volunteers: Continuously improve partnerships between staff and volunteers,
Qualifications and Job-Specific Competencies:
• Work Experience: 2+ years related experience in one of the following areas: camp maintenance, facility maintenance, general construction, custodial, landscaping
• Education: High school diploma.
• Certifications: Drinking Water Systems, Pool Operations (if applicable for the camp), Chainsaw Operator, or willingness to obtain these certifications.
• Health and Safety: Knows all health and safety legislation related to the operation of outdoor and residential settings, and is able to keep up to date with any changes and implement necessary operational updates as a result.
• Risk Management: Ability to identify, mitigate or escalate risks across a portfolio of outdoor education/residential settings.
• Maintenance: Broad general knowledge of building and equipment maintenance
• Technical Proficiency: Strong computer and technical skills and a growth-mindset when approaching new technology, including proficiency with Microsoft 365 / Office applications
• Travel: Must hold a valid Canadian driver’s license or have equivalent ability to travel
Working Conditions:
• Works on-site at a camp setting.
• Indoor and outdoor camp work setting during all seasons.
• Regular working hours – some evenings or weekends will be required.
• Regular exposure to hazardous materials (paint, cleaning chemicals, fuel products, etc)
• Some travel may be required depending on operational needs (< 10%)
• PRC (Police Record Check) and VSS (Vulnerable Sector Check) are required before the start date.
• Mandatory training requirement.
Physical Demands:
• Sitting at a computer for extended periods of time
• Ability to move around the property and be on feet for an extended period
• Ability to lift up to 50lbs
• Climbing ladders and working above head frequently
• Pushing, pulling and bending over frequently
• Operating machinery
