Job Description:
Durham Pattern & Model Ltd. is seeking a full-time CAD Designer for our Bowmanville facility.
The successful candidate will design automotive checking fixtures, gauges, holding jigs and related inspection tooling using customer CAD data, engineering drawings and GD&T requirements.
Cimatron experience is preferred. However, candidates with strong 3D mechanical design experience using SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX, PowerShape, Creo, Inventor or comparable CAD software will also be considered. Cimatron training can be provided.
Responsibilities
Design checking fixtures, gauges, holding jigs and inspection tooling.
Create complete 3D fixture models.
Produce detailed 2D manufacturing and assembly drawings.
Design practical datum locating, clamping and inspection systems.
Prepare bills of materials and specify purchased components.
Review customer drawings, CAD data and fixture standards.
Participate in internal and customer design reviews.
Work with CNC programmers, fixture builders and CMM technicians.
Revise designs based on customer feedback and shop-floor input.
Ensure designs are practical to manufacture, assemble, inspect and use.
Qualifications
Experience with 3D mechanical CAD design.
Fixture, gauge, jig, tooling, automation or special-machine design experience is strongly preferred.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T.
Understanding of datums, part locating, clamping and inspection principles.
Ability to create clear 2D manufacturing and assembly drawings.
Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
Good communication and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work on-site in Bowmanville.
Assets
Cimatron experience.
SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX, PowerShape, Creo or Inventor experience.
Automotive checking fixture or gauge design experience.
Experience with stamped-metal or injection-moulded automotive parts.
Knowledge of CNC machining and manufacturing processes.
Experience working with CMM inspection or dimensional certification.

Required skills:
Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to understand how parts locate, clamp, move and fit together.
Excellent computer skills and confidence learning new technical software.
Proficiency with 3D CAD modelling software such as Cimatron, SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX, Inventor, Creo or similar.
Ability to create accurate 3D models, assemblies and detailed 2D manufacturing drawings.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, dimensions, tolerances and GD&T.
Strong spatial visualization skills and the ability to understand complex shapes and part orientation.
Understanding of basic manufacturing methods, including CNC machining, fabrication and assembly.
Experience with 3D printing, rapid prototyping or additive manufacturing is an asset.
Strong attention to detail, accuracy and organized file management.
Good problem-solving skills and the ability to turn a customer requirement into a practical mechanical design.
