Job Description:
A family operated small-scale, sustainable farm using a model of ecological, polyculture farming in Port Perry, Ontario. All plants are started from seed on-site, which are then grown in a field or high-tech greenhouse environment. Once harvested, the mixed vegetables are cleaned, inspected, sorted and packaged by hand. The prepared produce is distributed through our on-site store and local restaurants. We also provide daily husbandry to our flock laying hens and broiler chickens. We are dedicated to producing exceptionally delicious organic foods, providing meaningful employment, and teaching employees about small-scale sustainable farming.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
• Assist in harvesting produce, transplanting seedlings, greenhouse work (e.g. seeding, potting up seedlings, filling trays with potting mix) and weeding crops
• Prune and train greenhouse crops
• Setup irrigation equipment
Secondary Duties & Responsibilities (as needed):
• Assist in washing, sorting, grading, packaging and labeling produce;
• Care for laying hens by providing feed and water and collecting eggs
Hours: 40 hours/week; daytime hours, Monday – Friday
Compensation: $15.75/hour
Availability: between end of April and the end of August (flexible), with possibility of job extension
through the fall months
Work Conditions and Requirements
• Work accurately and efficiently while focusing on quality and attention-to-detail
• Work in a fast-paced environment as a team as well as independently
• Ability to work efficiently doing outdoor physical labor on repetitive tasks in hot, dusty, damp, wet conditions; lift and carry up to 50lbs.
• Combination of standing/walking and sitting, bending, crouching, kneeling for extended periods
